Subject: GEOGRAPHY YEAR 11: 2018-19

Description of activities


This course will develop a student’s understanding of the following areas:


  • Current issues, that both people and the environment, face, at a local, national and international scale
  • Global challenges and how these can be managed and mitigated sustainably.
  • Values and attitudes to the environment and how people interact with and respond to it.
  • Preparation for understanding the world in which they are going to live and work.
  • Understanding the role as a global citizen and raise awareness of their responsibility to other people, to the environment and to the sustainability of the planet.
  • Research, analytical and presentation skills

Students will be examined across 3 papers.

  • Papers 1 (Physical geography) and 2 (Human geography) are 1 hour 30 minutes and are worth 88 marks (including 3 marks for spelling, punctuation, grammar and specialist terminology (SPaG)) and make up 35% of the course each.
  • The 3rd paper assesses geographical skills and fieldwork techniques. This paper lasts 1 hour 15 minutes and is worth 76 marks (including 6 marks for SPaG), which is worth 30% of GCSE. As part of the paper a resources booklet is made available 12 weeks before the exam.

Autumn 2nd half term

Economic change: how the global economy has changed and influences the UK’s economy.


Spring 1st half term

Rivers: physical processes and formation of features across the course of the river. Issues of flooding and river management.


Spring 2nd half term

Resource booklet released 12 weeks before the exam.
